DEFINITIONS

PIEZORINA
(Thraupidae; Ϯ Cinereous Finch P. cinerea) Gr. πιεζω piezō  to crush; ῥις rhis, ῥινος rhinos  nose; "G[UIRACA]. CENDRÉ. C[occoborus]. cinerea. De Lafr.  ... Ce bec, effectivement aussi élevé que celui des Guiracas, en diffère en ce qu'il est très arqué en dessus et beaucoup plus comprimé  ... On peut dire, enfin, que notre nouvelle espèce est un Gros-bec ou Guiraca à bec de Père-noir [Loxigilla noctis] et à pattes de Psittacin [Psittirostra psittacea]  ... Je proposerais alors, pour nom de genre, dont il deviendrait le type, celui de Piezorina (bec comprimé)" (de La Fresnaye 1843).
Var. Piezorhina ("As noted by Hellmayr, 1938, Field Mus. Nat. Hist. Publ., Zool. Ser., 13, pt. 11, p. 169, "Piezorina" is doubtless a lapsus for Piezorhina." (Paynter in Peters 1970, XIII, 115)).
