(Meliphagidae; Ϯ Long-billed Honeyeater M. megarhynchus) Gr. μελι meli, μελιτος melitos  honey; λῃστης lēistēs  robber  < λῃστευω lēisteuō  to rob; "Gen. nov. Melilestes, SALVAD.  (μελι mel, ληστης latro).  Habitus arachnotherinus; rostrum elongatum, robustum, capite duplo longius, maxilla apicem versus margine serrato, culmine basin versus lato, postice rotundato, naribus elongatis, linearibus; cauda mediocris, vel breviuscula, fere aequalis, rectricibus duabus extimis tantum paulo brevioribus; alae breviusculae, fere rotundatae; tarsi mediocres.   Typus: Ptilotis megarhyncha (G. R. Gr.)" (Salvadori 1875).
