Nahuatl/Aztec name Tlapalcocotli for a type of dove (tlapalli  red; cocotli  dove); "the body is fulvous and black, and the Head ash-coloured: Whence some call it Tlapalcocotli" (Ray 1678). Holloway 2003, has, “Tupi  ...  name for this bird,” but the name is not listed in Garcia 1929 (Susan Manchester, Björn Bergenholtz and Laurent Raty in litt.). The Ruddy Ground Dove has also been called Talpacoti or Talpacote Dove and Talpacoti’s Dove (Columbina).
