(Scolopacidae; Ϯ Short-billed Dowitcher L. griseus) Gr. λιμνη limnē  marsh; -δρομος -dromos  -racer, -runner  < τρεχω trekhō  to run; "Limnodromus, Wagl.  Sumpfläufer  ...   Der Vogel, welcher Herrn Prof. Wagler zur Aufstellung dieses Genus veranlaßte, ist Scolopax noveboracensis, Gmel., welche in Gestalt und Lebensart ein Bindeglied von Scolopax zu Totanus bildet  ...   Er lebt vorzüglich an den Seeküsten und den denselben benachbarten Sümpfen" (zu Wied 1833); "Limnodromus Wied, Beitr. Naturg. Brasil, 4, Abth., 2, 1833, p. 716. Type, by monotypy, Scolopax noveboracensis Gmelin = Scolopax griseus Gmelin." (Peters 1934, II, 272).
