DEFINITIONS

ROSTRHAMUS
(Accipitridae; Ϯ Snail Kite R. sociabilis) L. rostrum  beak; hamus  hook; the very slender, strongly hooked bill of the Snail Kite is specialized for severing snails from their shells; "IX.^e  Sous-genre. ROSTRHAMUS; Rostrhamus.  Bec étroit, mince, grêle, à mandibule supérieure très-recourbée, beaucoup plus longue que l'inférieure; celle-ci mince, courte et tronquée; narines supérieures et basales nues, arrondies; devant de l'œil nu; bouche fendue jusque sous les yeux; tarses courts, à demi vêtus, scutellés, munis d'ongles très-longs; ailes longues; queue moyenne, échancrée; plumes de la tête effilées, étroites.  Observ. Ce sous-genre se distingue nettement de tous les autres par des caractères précis.
