DEFINITIONS

SEMNORNIS
(Semnornithidae; Ϯ Toucan Barbet S. ramphastinus) Gr. σεμνος semnos  solemn, noble; ορνις ornis, ορνιθος ornithos  bird; "Pan (Richm. 1899, vice Tetragonops, preoccupied) being preëmpted (Oken, Mamm. 1816), as I am informed by Dr. T. S. Palmer, the genus of Barbets formerly known as Tetragonops may be called Semnornis,¹ with S. rhamphastinus (Jard.) as the type.  Semnornis frantzii (Scl.) of Costa Rica, is the only other species at present known.  ...¹ Σεμνος, solemn; ορνις, bird" (Richmond 1900). The imposing Toucan Barbet is a widely sought cage-bird confined to Colombia and Ecuador.
