(Paradisaeidae; Ϯ Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise S. melanoleucus) L. seleucis, seleucidis  migrant birds sent by the gods to destroy locusts, i.e. birds from paradise  < Gr. σελευκις seleukis, σελευκιδος seleukidos  locust-eating bird, perhaps the Rose-coloured Starling Pastor; the Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise is so-called from the numerous black ‘wires’ radiating from the male's flank plumes which, in display, are flicked across the face of the female (cf. Teleonema); "III^e. GENRE. — FALCINELLE ou SÉLEUCIDE. (Seleucidis, Less.)  ...  Observations.  M. Vieillot a appliqué le nom de falcinelle à tous les promerops. Nous avons donc dù, pour éviter de nouvelles fluctuations dans la nomenclature, changer cette dénomination et préférer celle de séleucide, que les anciens donnaient à un magnifique oiseau d'espèce inconnue.  Le genre séleucide, tel que nous le concevons, ne comprend ainsi qu'une espéce, remarquable par l'éclat extraordinaires de ses parures. Cet oiseau, que quelques auteurs, et M. Cuvier entre autres, ont nommé paradisier à douze filets, a ses parures des flancs terminées au contraire chacune par un filet, de sorte que le nom de multifil qu'on lui a aussi appliqué lui convient parfaitement.  ...  3^e.
