DEFINITIONS

THALASSORNIS
(Anatidae; Ϯ White-backed Duck T. leuconotus) Gr. θαλασσα thalassa, θαλασσης thalassēs  sea; ορνις ornis, ορνιθος ornithos  bird; despite this generic tag the White-backed Duck, an aberrant Afrotropical diving duck, is found only on shallow freshwater lagoons and pools, backwaters and floodplains; "THALASSORNIS nobis.  TYPE. Thalassornis leuconotus.  Affinity. The above genus appears to form a connecting link between the genus Clangula and Biziura, the structure of the tail being nearly that of the former genus, while the bill is that of the latter." (Eyton 1838).
