DEFINITIONS

PALMERIA
(Fringillidae; Ϯ Akohekohe P. dolei) Henry Charles Palmer (1866-1920) English collector for Lord Rothschild in California 1889, Chatham Is. 1890, Hawaiian Is. 1890–1893, and Midway 1893, emigrated to Australia 1894 (Björn Bergenholtz and Justin Jansen in litt.); "Fam. MELIPHAGIDÆ.   PALMERIA, gen. nov.  This genus is nearest to Acrulocercus, but differs from it in the three following points: — (1) The tail is square and has no elongated central tail feathers.  (2) There is a heavy crest of long curled feathers on the forehead, much like the crest of certain species of Sturnopastor.  (3) The beak is straighter, much shorter, and more pointed than in Acrulocercus, and in this respect Palmeria more nearly approaches my genus Viridonia (Ann. N. H. ser. 6, vol. x. p. 112, 1892).   3. PALMERIA MIRABILIS, sp. n.  ...  Hab. Island of Mauai." (Rothschild 1893); "Palmeria Rothschild, 1893, Ibis, p. 113. Type, by original designation [?] and monotypy, Palmeria mirabilis Rothschild = Himatione dolei Wilson." (Greenway in Peters 1968, XIV, 94).
