DEFINITIONS

STREPTOPELIA
(Columbidae; Ϯ Collared Dove S. decaocto) Gr. στρεπτος streptos  collar, neck-chain  < στρεφω strephō  to twist; πελεια peleia  dove; "Nous avons institué un second genre pour les Tourterelles à collier, dont la queue est plus courte et moins arrondie, et nous le nommons STREPTOPELIA. Il contient neuf espèces, quatre africaines et cinq asiatiques, dont la synonymie est tellement embrouillée, que nous préférons renvoyer à notre Conspectus, où nous n'avons rien épargué pour en venir à bout, et la rendre exacte et complète. Disons ici seulement qu'on est aussi peu fondé à n'admettre que deux espèces de Streptopelia pour l'Afrique occidentale qu'à les multiplier outre mesure. Quant à nous, qui en reconnaissons trois, conservant, comme de raison, le nom de vinacea, Gm., à l'espèce de moyenne grandeur, nous appelons Str. erythrophrys, Sw., la plus grande, nommée, quant aux exemplaires du Cap, C. levaillantii par A. Smith, sinon par Temminck, et semitorquatus par Ruppell, pur ceux d'Abyssinie; et nous laissons le nom de semitorquatus, Sw., à la plus petite. La quatrième espèce d'Afrique, C. lugens, Ruppell, est propre à l'Abyssinie, et se rapproche beaucoup, même par la taille, de T. erythrophrys, Sw.  Les cinq espèces asiatiques sont:  1. C. risoria, L., ou plutôt le type sauvage (dowraca,Hodgs., var.) de la Tourterelle blonde à collier, qu'on a eu grand tort de chercher en Afrique; la petite blanche n'est qu'une variété albine perpétuée en domesticité, comme le Pigeon blanc.  2. Col. bitorquata, Temm., Pig. I, t. 40, de la Malaisie, si commune à Java, à double collier noir et blanc.  3. Col. dussumieri, Temm., Pl. col. 188, de la Malaisie et des Philippines, à large collier dilaté.  4. Streptopelia gaimardi, Bp., à collier beaucoup plus étroit, à doigts beaucoup plus courts, rapportée des îles Mariannes par MM. Quoy et Gaimard.  5. La plus petite et la plus jolie espèce, à la fois de l'Inde, de Ceylan et des Philippines (OEna muroensis, Hodgs.), dont la prétendue femelle, Pl. col. 259, est le mâle de l'humilis de Temminck; son soi-disant mâle, Pl. col. 258, en étant la femelle, connue dans le commerce, probablement à cause de cette confusion, sous le nom de Turtur terrestris, traduction du nom français de la susdite planche."
