(Cuculidae; Ϯ Plaintive Cuckoo C. merulinus) Gr. κακομαντις kakomantis, κακομαντεως kakomanteōs  prophet of evil  < κακος kakos  bad, ill-boding; μαντις mantis, μαντεως manteōs  prophet. Heard calling from burial grounds at night, the Plaintive Cuckoo was regarded as a prophet of doom by the superstitious Javanese; "Dit bijgeloof berust op de gewoonte dezer vogels, van des morgens en des avonds in de schemering, en ook midden in den nacht, bij maanlicht, vaak hun eigenaardig zwaarmoedig stemgeluid te doen hooren, en zulks meestal op de begraafplaatsen, die, door hare eenzame ligging, op geringen afstand van de dorpen, de geliefkoosde verblijven dezer koekoeken zijn.
