DEFINITIONS

PANYPTILA
(Apodidae; Ϯ Lesser Swallow-tailed Swift P. cayennensis) Unattested Gr. πανυπτιλος panuptilos  well-feathered  < πανυ panu  exceedingly  < πας pas, παν pan  all; πτιλον ptilon  feather; "Subfam. Cypselinae.  ...  4. Panyptila nov. gen.   ...   Die Gattung Panyptila (πανυπτιλος, ganz befiedert, von πανυ, gar sehr, sehr viel, valde; πτιλον, Gefieder) unterscheidet sich von Cypselus schon genügend durch die weniger nach vorn gerichtete Hinterzehe und die nicht auf den Vorderlauf beschränkte, sondern auch über die Zehen bis zu den Nägeln sich erstreckende Befiederung.   Typus: P. cayennensis.  Hirundo cayennensis Gm." (Cabanis 1847).
