DEFINITIONS

MICROCARBO
(Phalacrocoracidae; Ϯ Pygmy Cormorant M. pygmaeus) Gr. μικρος mikros  little; genus Carbo de Lacépède, 1799, cormorant; "On sait que j'ai restreint le nom illigérien d'Haliæus au genre qui contient les Phalacrocoracides de petite taille, à bec court, crochu, et à queue très-allongée. Ceux qui n'admettent pas de pareilles restrictions pourront appeler Microcarbo cet excellent genre.  On sait également que le véritable H. pygmæus, son type, loin d'être le plus petit du genre, en est, au contraire, un des plus grands. En effet, ce nom, donné par Pallas, appartient à l'espèce orientale, qu'on trouve souvent en Hongrie, et dont le petit Cormoran qu'on voit à Alger doit tout au plus être considéré comme une race." (Bonaparte 1856).
