DEFINITIONS

HEMIPHAGA
(Columbidae; Ϯ New Zealand Pigeon H. novaeseelandiae) Gr. ἡμι- hēmi-  half-  < ἡμισυς hēmisus  half; genus Carpophaga Selby, 1835, imperial pigeon; "Le sixième genre est HEMIPHAGA, Bp., créé pour de très-brillants Carpophagiens de forte taille, dont le dessous du corps est mi-partie blanc et vert, et qui tiennent le milieu entre les genres précédents et Megaloprepia qui suit immédiatement.  Un de mes quatre Hémiphages tient encore au genre Zonœnas par la bande grise de sa queue: c'est l'espèce des Philippines que Gray a figurée comme Carpophaga poliocephala dans ses Genera of birds. Mon type, au reste, et je le déclare ici formellement, a toujours été la C. novæ-zealandiæ, Gm., qui est aussi C. argetræa de Forster, et spadicea de Lesson. Mais, malgré sa ressemblance, il ne faut pas la confondre, comme on ne l'a fait que trop souvent, avec la véritable spadicea, Lath. Cette seconde espèce du genre qui vit à la Nouvelle-Hollande, a le bec plus petit et le plumage beaucoup moins brillant, son manteau tirant au châtain foncé, et le reste du dos et des ailes n'étant que glacé de vert. C'est à elle qu'appartiennent comme synonymes les noms de C. leucogaster, Wagl., princeps, Vig., gigas, Ranzani; et les figures de M^me Knip, de Jardine et Selby, et de M. Gould."
