DEFINITIONS

PYGIPTILA
(Thamnophilidae; Ϯ Spot-winged Antshrike P. stellaris) Gr. πυγη pugē  rump; πτιλον ptilon  feather; "GENUS IV.  PYGIPTILA.  Rostrum validum, crassum, uncinatum, ad basin latius et apicem versus angustatum: tarsis brevissimis, digitum medium vix excedentibus, undique scutellatis; unguibus brevibus.   I have united under this title two birds, one of which I have previously arranged as a Thamnophilus, the other as a Myrmeciza. The strongly-hooked bill (of the first species especially) most resembles that of the Thamnophilines, with which they also agree in the nearly completely scutellated tarsi; whereas the lax, full feathering of the uropygium and shorter tail show some rapprochement towards Hypocnemis.    1. PYGIPTILA MACULIPENNIS.  Thamnophilus stellaris, Sclater, P.Z.S. 1854, p.112 (nec Spixi).  Thamnophilus maculipennis, Sclater, Edinb. Phil. Journ. i. p. 248.   ...   2. PYGIPTILA MARGARITATA.  Myrmeciza margaritata, Sclater, P.Z.S. 1854, p. 253. pl. 70." (P. Sclater 1858); "Pygiptila Sclater, Proc. Zool. Soc. London, pt. 26, 1858, p. 220. Type, by subsequent designation, Thamnophilus maculipennis Sclater (Sclater, Cat. Bds. Brit. Mus., 15, 1890, p. 217)." (Peters 1951, VII, 178); "239. Pygiptila stellaris  ...  Proposed races maculipennis (S Colombia and NE Peru) and purusiana (W Brazil) based on plumage variations which appear to be clinal, so they are merged with nominate, pending further study." (del Hoyo & Collar 2016, 62).
