DEFINITIONS

OREOTHRAUPIS
(Passerellidae; Ϯ Tanager Finch O. arremonops) Gr. ορος oros, ορεος oreos  mountain (i.e. Ecuadorean Andes); θραυπις thraupis  unknown small bird, perhaps some sort of finch. In ornithology thraupis signifies tanager. "Genus VIII. OREOTHRAUPIS.   Rostrum validum, tomiis mandibulæ superioris medio turgidis et mandibulam inferiorem tegentibus, sicut in genere Lanione, sed brevius, altius, latius et medio minus uncinatum: alæ breves, rotundatæ: cauda sicut in genere Arremone.    1. OREOTHRAUPIS ARREMONOPS.  Saltator arremonops, Jard. Edinb. N. Phil. Journ. 1855, ii. p. 119; Sclater, P. Z. S. 1855, p. 84. pl. xcii.   ...   Hab. Andes in the vicinity of Quito (Jameson).   ...  This peculiar Tanager in style of plumage and general habit corresponds most closely with the members of the genus Arremon, but the bill is altogether abnormal, the upper mandible swelling in the middle and overlapping the under, as in the genus Lanio, though not developed into a decided hook: but it is much shorter, broader and deeper than in the last-named genus, and has more general resemblance to that of some of the Saltatores." (P. Sclater 1856); "Oreothraupis Sclater, 1856, Proc. Zool. Soc. London, 24, p. 80. Type, by monotypy, Saltator arremonops Jardine [= Sclater]." (Paynter in Peters 1970, XIII, 207).

ARREMONOPS
(Passerellidae; Ϯ Olive Sparrow A. rufivirgatus) Genus Arremon Vieillot, 1816, sparrow; Gr. ωψ ōps, ωπος ōpos  appearance; “(71.)  GENUS ARREMONOPS RIDGWAY.  ...  586. A. rufivirgata LAWR. Texas Sparrow.   ...   (71.)  Page 434, GENUS ARREMONOPS.  New genus: Type, Embernagra rufivirgata LAWR.  The Mexican and Central American species usually referred to the genus Embernagra LESS. are so different in structural and other characters from the type of the latter (Emberiza platensis GMEL.) that only a moment's comparison is necessary to demonstrate their generic distinctness.  The name chosen for the new genus is selected on account of the very close affinity of the birds in question to those of the genus Arremon VIEILL. (usually placed among the Tanagers).  In fact, I have found it difficult to discover reasons for separating them generically from the latter.” (Ridgway 1896); "Arremonops Ridgway, Man. N. Amer. Bds., 2nd ed., pp. 434, 605, 1896—type, by orig. desig., Embernagra rufivirgata Lawrence." (Hellmayr, 1938, Cat. Birds Americas, Pt. XI, p. 439).
