DEFINITIONS

LOPHORINA
(Paradisaeidae; Ϯ Superb Bird-of-Paradise L. superba) Gr. λοφος lophos  crest, tuft; ῥις rhis, ῥινος rhinos  nose; "87. LOPHORINE, Lophorina.  Paradisea, Linn. Gm. Lath.  Bec garni jusqu'au-delà du milieu de plumes alongées, très-comprimé latéralement, étroit en dessus, grêle, droit, échancré et fléchi à la pointe. — Plumes du cou longues et disposées en forme d'aile.   Esp. Le Superbe, Buff." (Vieillot 1816); "Lophorina Vieillot, 1816, Analyse, p. 35. Type, by monotypy, "Le Superbe, Buff." = Paradisea superba Pennant." (Mayr in Peters 1962, XV, 193). In applying the phylogenetic species concept, Cracraft 1992, recognised no fewer than six species in this genus; it has recently been suggested that the Superb Bird-of-Paradise in fact comprises three separate species.
