(Icteridae; Ϯ Yellow-throated Chat I. virens) L. ικτερος icterus  yellow bird, perhaps the Golden Oriole Oriolus, the sight of which was said to cure jaundice  < Gr. ικτερος ikteros yellow bird, otherwise unidentified  < ικτερος ikteros  jaundice-yellow; "EXPLICATION DE LA PLANCHE PREMIÈRE.  ...  Nº 9. Bec de l'Ictérie, Icteria, lequel est garnie à sa base de quelques soies divergentes, robuste, convexe, un peu arqué, entier et pointu. Ce nouveau genre est décrit dans ce volume.   ...   ICTÉRIES.  CARACTÈRES. Bec robuste, garni à sa base de poils divergens, alongé, convexe, un peu arqué, entier et pointu; mandibules à-peu-près d'égale longueur, à bords un peu recourbés en dedans; narines rondes et découvertes; langue bifide à son extrémité; quatre doigts, trois devant, un derrière, l'intermédiaire soudé avec l'externeà sa base et totalement séparé de l'interne.   L'ICTÉRIE DUMICOLE, Icteria dumicola.   Pl. 55.  ...   Le Dumicole se rapproche plus du Troupiale que tout autre oiseau par son bec fort, à pointe acérée et sans aucune échancrure  ...  Si l'on consulte les habitudes et les mœurs de cet oiseau, on voit qu'elles n'ont que peu de rapports avec celles du Merles et aucuns avec celles du Moucherolle. N'étant donc ni un Merle, ni un Gobe-mouche, ni même un Troupiale, j'ai dû changer ses fausses dénominations; et comme je ne trouve point dans les genres connus la réunion des caractères qui lui sont propres, j'en fais le type d'un nouveau." Modern work indicates that the Yellow-throated Chat is either a primitive icterid, as here considered, or deserving of familial recognition within the oscines, leading some to bemoan the similarity of Icteriidae to Icteridae.
